I’m working on some new sculptures to hang in the windows of the Larry Spring Museum, here’s a peek at some materials I am using. ✨ I am continuing my admiration of light’s refraction. Refraction is when a sunbeam goes through a material and rather than traveling back out as the same beam it gets bent by the material and scatters into spectrums of colors. You see that when it goes through a cut crystal and makes rainbows or in these abalone shells, it enters the layers of shell and bounces back out bent into beautiful shimmering colors. You see this phenomenon happen throughout nature like in snowflakes’ sparkles, sun rainbows dancing on the bottom of a sandy lake, bug wings, or shiny mountain minerals. My eye has always been very attracted to these sparkles. In recent years I have been working on a body of work on this topic in paintings, sculpture, and jewelry. ✨ This new artwork is in progress and will be installed in March so you can stroll by and see it then, sunny day will be recommended for full display! I recently carved this jade into a heart and fabricated its custom setting. Just in time for your sweetheart! Seems like it’s a lucky 🍀 heart since it’s such a pretty green. This is nephrite jade mined in Wyoming, I buy rough pieces of it from the miners and then cut and polish it in my studio. This piece is translucent when you hold it up to the sun and about 3/4 inch wide.
