This agate pendant mixes smooth curves of a cut cabochon with natural mineral shapes. Alternating stripes of white and translucent color appear next to crystal formations that grew in the stone. To mirror the mineral structure found within I sculpted three sterling silver angular shapes that hang above the agate. I carved the gem from a large rough agate that was found in the Rocky Mountains.
When crystals slowly grow, they follow certain habits of symmetry and repetition, but since it is an organic process cool things happen along the way that affect the outcome. Changes in pressure, temperature, or different minerals mixing are some influences. All of these natural processes create one of a kind gemstones.
This pendant hangs from a sterling silver bead chain. I have cut the back open so that light can travel through and create a window-like appearance.
Agate (Wyoming), Sterling Silver.
